Why quoting is hard here

The quote has to capture the requirements that change the product, price and installation.

Configuration checks

1The specified grade changes the build.

Designers and estimators need the same understanding of the required grade. Differences in substrate, edges or construction can change both the price and what the shop must produce.

Requirements to check
  • Applicable AWI standard and edition
  • Specified grade
  • Substrate and edge requirements

2Veneer choices affect yield and cost.

Match, cut and sequence determine how the finished work looks and how material is used. Those choices need to be explicit before the estimator prices the configuration.

Requirements to check
  • Match type
  • Cut
  • Panel sequence
  • Flitch availability

3Allowances need a shared definition.

A hardware or finish allowance can mean different things to the designer, estimator and buyer. Named line items make it easier to review what the quote includes.

Requirements to check
  • Hardware model and finish
  • Finish system
  • Allowance basis

Scope note.

These are configuration considerations, not a compliance certification. Applicable requirements depend on the product, project location and current standards. Confirm them with a qualified specialist.

What Threekit does about it

1

Set the grade once

Needs Analysis asks for the grade before it asks for anything else. Set Premium and Configure drops the substrates and edge treatments that Premium will not accept. The designer answers in plain words about the room and the look. The estimator stops carrying a mental checklist of what each grade forbids.

2

Price the match and cut

Configure treats match type and cut as priced attributes, not as notes on a drawing. Pick sequence-matched quarter sawn white oak and the price moves as you pick it.

3

Show allowances as named lines

Price applies your hardware and finish rules and puts them on the quote as named lines. The hinge shows the manufacturer, the model and the finish. The finish shows the system. The reviewer can see what was assumed, instead of finding out at the shop drawing review.

Work through a configuration

A 40-foot reception desk in quarter sawn white oak, specified AWI Premium. It needs a transaction top at 34 inches maximum for the accessible section, sequence-matched veneer across seven front panels, and a conversion varnish finish. The accessible section changes the panel layout, which changes the veneer sequence, which changes the flitch.

Questions to settle before quoting

  • Which grade, material and finish has the buyer specified?

  • Which selections affect layout or matching?

  • What still needs confirmation from the shop?

Keep availability checks and shop-drawing decisions with the teams that own them. The configuration should make those open questions clear.
